How does my child move to the next reading level?
We both meet with students one on one and administer as assessment. During this assessment students are asked to read a portion of the story out loud. We test for fluency (how your child sounds as a reader) and decoding (does he/she know all of the words, what does he/ she do when they come to a word they do not know). Students then read the rest of the story silently. Afterwards they must retell the big important parts of the story. They are then asked a series of literal (right from the text) and inferential (higher level thinking) questions. If students complete all of this with proficiency they move to the next level. If they do not, their errors are analyzed and they receive further instruction based on their needs.
What can I do to help my child continue to grow in reading?
HAVE THEM READ! READ! READ! And discuss their reading with them! Rather than just asking them questions, have a conversation about reading. Studies have shown that once a student has read about 25 books on a level they should be ready to move onto the next.
Time it takes to read one book:
I or lower- less than 10 minutes
J/K- 10 minutes
L- 24-40 minutes
M- 30-60 minutes
N- 40 to an hour and fifteen minutes
